The hotel industry is evolving and so are the careers. In order to adapt to the market, different skill sets are now required in various fields. There appears to be an emerging trend towards General Managers with skills in development and sales being more desirable than those with the more traditional operations skills focus.

Intercontinental Hotel Group, one of the world’s leading hotel companies, recently changed its model making leaders responsible for the organisation’s regional growth. They are clearly not afraid to break away from the traditional structure as they have disestablished the Chief Development Officer role (for Europe, Asia, Middle East, & Africa) effective from February 2020, putting the development responsibility on the new Managing Director’s plate, Rajit Skukumaran who comes from a development background.

While this is surprising to see, it’s only inevitable as markets, competitors, and expectations change over the years. We can’t wait to see what this new decade will bring!
